He has been quoted in major media outlets including the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post and is now offering you some of his most thoughtful insights on the business school admissions process. VT: How much time should one expect to devote to adequately preparing for and completing an application for an MBA program? Jeremy: From start to finishif you include class visits and GMAT prep (which typically takes three months) and assuming that you would be applying to four or five schools across two application rounds (which is a common approach)the entire MBA application process might take a well-organized and diligent individual six to ten months. Of course, some applicants will study for the GMAT and prepare applications at the same time, so this schedule could be shortened to three or four months total. In terms of working on an individual application, if the candidate is disciplined and has completed the GMAT, it might take him or her, working a few evenings per week, a month to complete a single well thought-out and polished application. Each MBA application is different, with different essay questions in particular. So, you will not be working with one application that can just be tweaked from school to schooleach application involves its own process. You will likely become a little more efficient with each application you complete, but you should be ready for a very time-consuming process! VT: What would you say is the single most important thing to focus on for this kind of application? Jeremy: The MBA application process is holistic, meaning that it encompasses a variety of important components, none of which is given special weight. When you apply to a business school, you will need to submit a GMAT score, your GPA, several essays, roughly three recommendations, a resume and other materials. Each of these componentsalong with an interview, which could followis a piece of the puzzle the admissions committees evaluate to determine whether you have what it takes to succeed both in the future and in their academic and social environment. This is not to say that any of these pieces are unimportanton the contrary, all of them are very important. But you should not assume that if you have a 4.0 GPA or worked at Goldman Sachs, for example, you are destined to get into every school to which you apply. No one element of your candidacy will define you as an applicant or convince the admissions committees to admit you. VT: What do MBA admissions officers look for most in the essay questions? Jeremy: MBA admissions officers are looking for sincerity and personality, not a Pulitzer Prizelevel essay or some wild card in your profile that will force them to pay attention. So, there is no recipe for writing a guaranteed successful essay. The first step in creating a great essay is brainstorming thoroughly to identify the stories from your life that will make you stand out. You do not need to have been on the biggest deal at J.P. Morgan or founded Facebook to get into a top MBA program. You just need to demonstrate that you have done the everyday things in your life and career remarkably well. We encourage our clients to think about those moments when they did something impactfulwhether it was standing up for a principle or motivating someone who felt defeated or envisioning a creative solution to a problem or accomplishing some other notable featand then help them write about those experiences in narrative form and in detail, because the story is where the power lies, not the language. If you have a truly great story, it will largely tell itself, and your actions will stand out. That is when admissions officers take notice. Avoid bragging, but make sure to highlight your accomplishments and your pivotal role in them. VT: What are the biggest mistakes one can make on a business school application? Jeremy: Almost every school asks candidates to discuss their post-MBA goals, and many applicants make the mistake of being vague in response to that question, offering a bland, blanket statement such as I want to work in marketing. What kind of marketing? Why would you be good at such a job? How has your career to date prepared you for a role in this industry? Applicants need to clearly show that they have done their homework, really understand the types of jobs they are proposing and have the skills, interest and, in many cases, experience to get where they want to goparticularly with the addition of an MBA to their qualifications. Admissions committees can love all that you have done in the past, but if they are not convinced that you have a legitimate plan for your future, they will not choose to invest in youyou can rest assured that someone else will have a more compelling plan. VT: In what ways does the MBA admissions process differ the most from the undergraduate admissions process? Jeremy: Of course, the required standardized tests are different, and the availability of help is likewise dissimilar. You will not have a guidance counselor on hand to help you out, though you can choose to seek out professional consultants, like mbaMissions, to guide you along the way. In addition, a common application can sometimes be used for several undergraduate programs, but that really does not exist at the MBA level. You will also need to prepare a resume as part of your application materials for business school, and the required recommendations are often more complex than those submitted for undergraduate programs. There are actually many small differences, and they add up! VT: Can anything in a persons application automatically disqualify him or her from being considered for an MBA program (e.g., low GPA, lack of particular work experience, etc.)? Jeremy: Although no business schools have GPA or GMAT cutoffs, seeing anyone with a sub-500 GMAT score get into a top 15 school is exceedingly rare (averages at top schools are approximately 710, or 92nd percentile and higher). A few candidates get into prestigious schools each year with sub-600 scores, but this is also rare. The MBA admissions process is holistic, as we explained earlier, but some limitations do exist. If your GMAT scores are very low, you will need to have a very strong GPA to compensate for them, and you will also need to be remarkably accomplished in your work experience, community endeavors and other facets of your life. If your GPA is low (under a 3.0), the other components will need to be strong for balance purposes as well. Scores alone will never get a candidate into school. If you have perfect scores, but you have a weak and jumbled work history, there is very little chance that you will succeed. Weak professional history is as close as you can come to an automatic disqualifier. VT: What kind of work experiences should be highlighted in the MBA application? Jeremy: Admissions committees are not seeking applicants who have held a specific professional position or role. Candidates who are bankers frequently complain that they are just another banker and those with careers in industries other than banking often worry that admissions committees love bankers and so they will be left on the outside looking in. The truth is that the MBA programs want to see impact, and every applicantregardless of industrycan reveal impact through his or her essays, resume, interview and recommendations. You do not need to be a rousing, Churchillian leader to get into Harvard Business Schoolyou just need to convince the admissions officers that, again, you have done the everyday things in your life remarkably well. You might be a great mentor, an accomplished synergist or a creative problem solveror even that Churchillian orator/motivator. In short, you might have different styles or personas in different environments, but no single type should be highlighted. The experiences you share in your application should convey your character for you, and having a diversity of them is great! VT: What advice do you have regarding GMAT test prep? Jeremy: I think that taking a GMAT preparatory class is a smart ideait brings a very beneficial, and often necessary, discipline to most peoples study. We at mbaMission recommend Manhattan GMAT and Kaplan GMAT and have elected to partner with them because of the profoundly positive feedback we have consistently received about them from our clients. My only advicebecause I am not the GMAT guywould be to give yourself enough time to succeed. As I noted earlier, studying for the GMAT can take several months; classes alone are nine weeks long, and then you need to absorb all that information and work on mitigating your weaknesses. Moreover, the schools actually encourage candidates to take the GMAT more than once, because they only count an applicants highest score, which is then used to calculate their averagesand because these averages are considered in the various business school rankings, they want them as high as possible. You can only take the test once per month, so if you need a few months to study and to take the test multiple times, you will need the luxury of time! VT: Is having work experience before starting an MBA degree absolutely necessary? Jeremy: No, for the top schools, having formal work experience is not absolutely necessary, but you will need to have some proxy for this kind of experience if you are to be successful. So, perhaps you started a small business in your dorm or were president of student government at your undergraduate institution or had a series of unpaid internships in which you made a notable impact or held a leadership role on a sports teamall of these examples represent valid proxies that could reveal your potential going forward and your maturity, both of which the schools want to see in your application. VT: What are the characteristics of a great MBA program? Jeremy: The top 15 to 20 programs are all playing a game of cat and mouseone school opens a new building, and the rest soon follow suit. One establishes an incubator on campus, and soon after, the others have incubators, too. The leading MBA programs have large endowments and the ability to direct funds to attract great professors and promising students. Sure, brand strength might attract more candidates to Harvard Business School or the Wharton School, but the top 15 programs will all provide you with an excellent education. In short, there is no single characteristic that applicants should look for. Candidates need to identify what exactly they need and want from an MBA program and what kind of environment will be most conducive to their success. The environment differs greatly between Whartons 850-student class and Dartmouth-Tucks 240-person class, between Chicago Booths flexible curriculum (in which you independently choose all your classes from day one) and Harvard Business Schools preset, required core curriculum that spans the entire first year. Neither of these options is better than the other, but one is likely a better fit for you personally. How to Approach Transferring Schools We all hope that well get our college decision right on the first try. Obviously, thats the ideal way to do it. Spending months agonizing over applications, personal essays, waiting for those big envelopes in the mail, and looking over every college review site out there you dont want to have to do that again. Transferring schools usually isnt in your four-year plan as you prepare for your university adventure as a freshman but it can happen, and usually when its the farthest idea from your mind. There are a number of reasons this can happen. Perhaps you werent thorough enough on your campus visit or perhaps you didnt make a visit at all. Maybe you didnt do enough research on the availability of academic opportunities you desire or the kind of town atmosphere you want. Realizing halfway through your freshman year that you are not getting the kind of experience you need is never a fun feeling, but its better to recognize and admit it at that point rather than staying in denial and getting cheated out of the college experience you deserve. Also, sometimes circumstances out of your control can come into play and drive you to transferring. Its very possible that you did do all the necessary prep-work to make an informed decision about the college you would attend, but you ended up not being comfortable with any of your peers. Different schools do attract different people and sometimes you just may not find yourself fitting in as well as you would have hoped. And that doesnt always mean youre not trying hard enough or not utilizing enough of the readily available social opportunities unfortunately, sometimes things just dont work out. Whether we like to acknowledge it or not, social aspects are a very important part of college, and how can you be happy living on your own if you do not have some sort of support system physically there by your side? A particular environment may not be right for you specifically and if you accept that and believe you are not at fault, then you will be on a healthy track to make the infamous transfer. Now, this all leads up to why transferring can be good. Its very refreshing and comforting to know you have a second chance at the awesome college experience youve dreamed of. You can start all over, meet new people, live in a new place, try new things. Plus, now that you have some of the college experience under your belt, you arent a totally blind freshman who is completely unaware of how things work. You will have some good background about college life to make sure you do it right this time. However, you cannot be nave and think acclimating to a new college in your second or third year will be as easy as going to a new college as a freshman was. Universities make the first few weeks of school a social haven for freshmen, creating orientations and events that are specifically catered to that incoming class. This time, you are not a part of that brand new group you are just a brand new individual, alone. Granted, many students transfer to schools where they already know someone, and that certainly makes the transition a lot smoother. But if you are going into this without knowing a soul, be prepared to work a little harder at breaking into the social scene and learning about the environment around you. Its so easy to get scared by this prospect and just decide to tolerate your original school. But think of it this way is it better to be miserable at a school youre safely familiar with or to nervously put forth some extra effort to get to know a new one? You deserve another chance. You deserve the best college experience you can have. Maybe transferring will make you a little uncomfortable initially, but that wont last forever whereas staying at the first school that you hated, might. Which path will leave you happiest at graduation? Thats the path you want to go on, the path that will end with no regrets.

The angle between your thighs and calves will be greater than 90 °.The snare drum should be between your knees and slightly higher than your thighs.Hi-hat and Snare PositionYour arms should be crossed.Your right hand will be over your left hand so that you can hit the edge of the hi-hat.The left hand is positioned to hit the snare drum directly in the centre. The angle between your two drumsticks should be just under 90 °.You’ll adopt the same positions for the toms as you would the snare drum.Bass drum PositionThere are several possible positions. I’m going to start with the most logical and the quickest.Place your foot as far up the pedal as possible and lift your heel.You’ll move your entire leg when you hit the bass drum as well as feeling it in your thigh.Cymbal positionWith the ride, your right hand will be perpendicular to the floor. You’ll hit it with the tip of the stick.If you play the bell, you’ll hit is with the thicker part of the stick to the left of the screw.It’s the same for the crash cymbal except that you’ll only play using the thicker part of the stick.Holding the DrumsticksUnfortunately, it’s not as easy as you might think!Just like religion and politics, everyone has an opinion on the matter.There are two main ways to hold the drumsticks.However, in reality, you can hold the drumsticks in four different ways.Traditional Grip: This is the oldest way to hold the drumsticks and is commonly used in jazz drumming. You don’t hold each stick in exactly the same way. Your non-dominant hand holds the stick under the palm whereas your dominant hand will hold the stick similarly to how you’d hold a pen. Have a look at how Buddy Rich does it.Matched Grips:French grip: you hold the sticks towards one another. You use your fingers to create the movement in the sticks.German grip: the sticks are moved by the wrists and your palms are parallel to the ground. This method is used to generate power.American grip: This is a mix of the two previous grips and is difficult to get right. You use both your fingers and your wrists in order to give you more versatility.The toms that you see on drum kits nowadays were once war drums. Each one has its pros and cons depending on the style of music you’re playing.Recording and Filming YourselfIf you’re not getting music or drum tutorials, it can be difficult to correct errors. It’s a good idea to record or film yourself with a camera.Sit in front of your computer and film yourself.Not only will you be able to see yourself getting better, but  you’ll also be able to check your posture and any techniques you’re wanting to get better at.Play with a MetronomeWhether you’re teaching yourself to drum or learning with a teacher, the metronome will quickly become your best friend.A drummer’s job is to keep time. To make sure yo u’re perfect at it, there’s nothing better than a metronome.A drumbeat helps the electric guitar, bass, saxophone, etc., to stay in time.It may seem dull, but you have to keep time correctly. It’s also a good idea to start slowly at around 60 beats per minute before moving up to 90 and then 120.Be PatientWhether you’re learning a binary or ternary rhythm, it can take some time, especially if you’re teaching yourself.Be patient!You’re not going to learn any quicker by skipping important steps. Playing drums is a mentally demanding activity as you need to have coordination and be able to operate your limbs independently of one another.  You also need to give your brain time to remember things.Playing slowly at first will allow your brain to understand and remember each technique. Above all, make sure that you concentrate when you practise. Turn off the TV, set yo ur phone to silent, and disconnect from the internet so that nothing stands in the way of your progress.RelaxTo get better at playing the drums, regardless of the genre, you need to relax.Playing while tense will make your playing less fluid. Furthermore, if you’re tense, you also run the risk of doing yourself an injury.Think about doing some breathing exercises and stretching before you start practising: especially your neck, back, wrists, and heels.You should breathe naturally as you practise. It would be a shame to not make use of it.This will open a lot of doors for you, especially when it comes to understanding sheet music for drums.  You’ll also be able to communicate with different musicians more easily as well as read sheet music.Play Anywhere and EverywherePlaying the drums as often as possible is a great idea but you won’t always have a drum kit with you. It doesn’t matter!Buying a drum kit isn’t necessarily the first thing you need to do. You can practise with the drumsticks before you get your first kit.Cushions, your thighs, electronic pads, and even a chair can become a musical instrument!  Even air drums can help you practise before you buy an electronic or acoustic drum kit.That said, even if you have a drum kit, there’s nothing stopping you from practising a few rudiments on your lunch break.Enjoy Yourself!  Don’t forget that playing a musical instrument is fun.Of cour se, you’ll need to practise in order to acquire new techniques or become a professional drummer.However, playing for fun is a great way to improve your creativity and that’s why we often want to learn to play a musical instrument!Make the most of it by playing a song you like or just improvising.Join a BandWhether with friends or by placing an ad for other musicians, playing in a band is a great way to get better quickly.Joining a band is a great way to practise playing the drums with other musicians. Types of Writing Your Teen Needs to Learn Learning to write well is an essential skill that your teen will use just about every day in high school. Most subjects incorporate writing into their curriculum, and all teachers have the expectation that students are adept at communicating this way. As teens prepare themselves for college-level academics, they must be proficient and versatile writers, able to convey their ideas and arguments clearly and coherently. But different assignments and projects call for different kinds of writing. Here are a few types your teen must master during in high school: Essays The essay is very common in high school. Essays require students to analyze, speculate or interpret something from their own perspective. Depending on the goal, high school teachers assign a variety of essay types: expository, compare and contrast, persuasive and descriptive, to name a few. No matter the type of essay, your teen should be comfortable planning, writing, editing and revising his or her work by introducing and developing a topic and making any claims or opinions clear and compelling. Your teen must be able to establish the desired tone and bolster any claims with evidence and good reasoning. Fiction and nonfiction stories Storytelling is another type of writing that your teen will learn in high school and something that will come up on those college admissions essays. Narrative techniques will help your teen paint a picture, introduce and develop characters and/or the setting, and convey concrete and abstract details to push a plot (or nonfiction story) forward. This kind of writing takes creativity and a lot of planning to bring words to life. Sensory language and the little details can make a tremendous difference in building tension, interest and/or excitement. Informative writing With informative or explanatory writing, students introduce a topic, offer facts and examples, and incorporate details. Put simply, this type of writing is all about explaining something clearly (e.g. a complex concept) or answering a factual question. Your teen will be asked frequently throughout high school to prove his or her knowledge about different subjects in this type of formatin longer report form or via shorter responses. Project reports The main purpose of a project report is to share research on an assigned topic. Research papers become especially important (and more common) in college. That said, your teen might have projects arise throughout high school wherein he or she is asked to research a topic, synthesize information and present it in the form of a cohesive, coherent report. Of course, this is just a sample of the kinds of writing that your teen will be exposed to in high school. There are also other types like reflective journal writing, book or story reports, lab reports in science classes, and more. Bottom line: knowing how to write effectively is absolutely critical in high schooland something that your teen must practice. The reality is that writing does not come easily to all students.
